As a drummer and project studio owner I am intrigued by the notion that drums and other percussion instruments could play a larger and more interesting role in modern music. We don't just have to sit at the back and keep the beat! And so began the experimentation in 2013 with the Bastardized Percussion series. Installment 3 of this series continues my quest to explore making music (and we use that term loosely) using only percussion instruments, my meagre talents, and a lot of messing about with effects that don't normally get used on percussion instruments along with any other studio tricks I can dream up. Since this is intended to be only about instrumental percussion music I have always steered clear of any "spoken" words in these pieces. This time, however I have made a minor exception as there are two (sort of) spoken passages that I simply could not resist using. "Bump In The Night" contains excerpts from a very strange, distorted and eerie phone message from my home answering machine which was unintelligible to begin with and is completely weirded up when presented backwards with a lot of effects. (I just had to have that extra spookiness). "Hit N' Miss" features our 11 month old granddaughter Ellie laying down a steady beat (or in reality quite a beatin!) on her Fisher Price Xylophone over which I layered whatever seemed to fit. A truly improvised piece that may be the best one on this EP (certainly the most fun to record). The "spoken" part of this one comes at the end as Ellie lets out some rather exuberant sounds during her solo! The girl gets into it for sure!! (She's a natural) Throughout the rest of it, in addition to the usual instrumentation, I experiment with some new sounds including a Djumbe, Ratchet, Meditation Bowl, and playing a the snares on a snare drum with a guitar pick to mention a few. You'll even hear what a Floor Tom and cymbals sound like through a Wah Wah pedal. Nothing is sacred as we continue to try anything and everything!
