Montreal's Misstress Barbara had friends like Sam Roberts, Brazilian Girls and Peter Bjorn and John's Bjorn Yttling pop by on her Juno-nominated 2010 LP I'm No Human, but the electronic musician has decided to go it alone on her next solo set, Many Shades of Grey. A press release from MapleMusic, which issues the album on April 3, praises Misstress Barbara's latest for pushing her into "a new arena of creativity with stronger song-writing and more confident production," while retaining the pop hooks that propelled her past work, and the songwriter seems to agree. "I'm proud of the evolution in the writing," she said in a statement. "I really think every song has a strong hook, which was something I wanted to make happen. I very much enjoy performing a song where you see the audience singing along, especially after 16 years as an underground DJ." The bulk of Many Shades of Grey is said to bump along at around 130 beats per minute, and features "sensual synths, solid beats and huge hooks, with a hint of '80s-influenced fun sprinkled throughout."
