As a drummer and project studio owner I am intrigued by the notion that drums and other percussion instruments could play a larger and more interesting roll in modern music. We don't just have to sit at the back and keep the beat! And so began the experimentation in 2013 with the Bastardized Percussion series. The first instalment of this series was bookended by two pieces, "The Only Rule Is..." and "There Are No Rules" so named in an attempt to convey the basic premise of this series. To explore the possibilities for making music using only percussion instruments and without adhering to any hard and fast rules. With this instalment I have come to realize that I AM actually following a few rules, or at least a formula, whether intentional or not. The pieces ARE comprised of only percussion instruments, however I also rely heavily on effects not normally used on percussion, unorthodox recording techniques, and as much imagination as I can muster. This time out the roto toms have been featured a bit more and I have also used the drum kit as a whole for the backbeat of several pieces. And in one of my prouder moments, I have incorporated the sound of duct tape being torn from the skin of a bass drum (then of course weirding it up with effects!) Ahh...duct tape...is there anything you can't do?? You'll also hear an Amazon Nut Stick played through two effects (robo voice and alienizer) then placed over many layers of eerie, droning cymbal sounds to hopefully add to the spacy feel of "Somewhere Out There". (And who knew you could get feedback from the crown of a cymbal?) Then of course there's "Konstructing Khaos" which I whole heartedly admit was inspired by Nick Mason's "The Grand Vizer's Garden Party".
