Stand By Your Dog

Stand By Your Dog

I am here to inform you that Steve Goodman no longer holds the title to writing the perfect country music and western song. I do. Yes, for over 30 years, David Allen Coe's rendition of "You never even call me by my name" was the King of all Country and Western songs. But my song, "John Belushi's Still Alive!", is now the perfect country and western song. Here's why: Goodman's song fails to mention Wrigley Field and The Chicago Cubs, as mine does. His song fails to mention having to roll your own cigarettes and drinkin' the cheapest whiskey, rum and gin, as mine does. His song fails to mention bib overalls and pickup trucks, or John Deere tractors on Lake Shore Drive, as mine does. His song doesn't say anything about Telluride, Colorado, or ski lifts, as mine does. Moreover, his song doesn't say anything about graveyards, or smoking pot, or palm trees in the sand, or beaches, or Waikiki, as mine does. Above all, Goodman's song doesn't say anything about John Belushi, and how he's still alive, as my song does. Therefore, it is my great pleasure to let the readers of The Westword, and all of Colorado, that one of its own now hold the rights to the title of writing and singing, "The perfect country and western song". I have also written the greatest dog song ever recorded as well. I wrote this with my dog "Harry" in mind. It's a parody of Tammy Wynette's "Stand by your Man". If you own a dog that barks all day long, this is your song. What album wouldn't be worth it's weight in gold if it doesn't include a song about drinking on a beach by noon. Therefore, I wrote a song with that exact title. I played it solo acoustic and it turned out pretty damned good. You'll love it. I couldn't release this without writing a one minute and six second rap song. Ditch Diggin' Muthu from Kalamazoo is straight out of the blue. I was in Telluride, Colorado when I wrote it, which has nothing to do with Kalamazoo or Michigan. But it has everything to do with 57 Chevy's and 69 Corvettes. I think you'll like it--hopefully. And what songwriter isn't worth his tenure if he can't write a fun Christmas song? I knew I could do better than "Grandma got run over by a reindeer" , and I did. It's called "Christmas Time in New Orleans". You will love the melody and the lyrics--Merry Christmas on that one. As far as "My Koochie Koo", it's another solo acoustic that I just loved writing and singing. I think you'll love it, too. Overall, it's a six song album that's simply irresistible. It's a smash hit in the car for that road trip as well. Enjoy it. Mahalo.gin
