"Frigate", issued in 1994 and featuring the same line up, comes like a much better album than the former CD, better ideas and more hooks, pretty different to the monolithic and samey "Attitude"; no doubt: April Wine always were an uneven band. "Look into the sun" is a compelling heavy rock opener, followed by the Willie Dixon standard "I just wanna make love to you", song that was covered by several known artists (Saxon, Rolling Stones, Foghat, The Kinks, Yardbirds, Lee Aaron; and a long etc). A revamped version of "Tonight is a wonderful time to fall in love", original from "Stand back" (1975), fits alright in this "Frigate", same as another cover: Steve Winwood's "I'm a man". There is here still a residual AOR feel, and some ballads that have not the tasty magic of their 70s' balladry, albeit "Whatever it takes" ain't bad. "Drivin' with my eyes closed" is a nice soft rock, same as "Hard to believe", tough this latter sounds a tad like dated and formulaic album oriented rock from the 80s. A 50s' rock & roll, "Keep on rockin" conveys the album to an end, which is closed with the synths-driven funk "Mind over matter". "Frigate" is a decent album, the best April Wine put out in the 90s -that is scarce anyway: 2 records-, at least is more varied an appealing than the dull "Attitude".
